Blagaj

Blagaj
Just a short drive away from Mostar, Blagaj is a tiny spot in Bosnia and Herzegovina that's definitely worth checking out. The place is famous for its Tekija, a centuries-old Dervish monastery built right against a cliff face. The monastery's position next to the emerald green Buna River makes for some seriously impressive photos.
The Buna River itself is special - it's one of the strongest springs in Europe, pushing out a massive amount of crystal-clear water from a cave in the cliff. The combination of the ancient stone monastery, dramatic rock face, and vibrant water creates a scene that doesn't even look real sometimes.
Blagaj has a rich history mixing Ottoman and Mediterranean influences. The area was settled long before the Ottomans arrived, but really came into its own during their rule in the 15th century. The Dervish house (Tekke) was built around 1520 as a place for Islamic mystical practices.
The town has a peaceful atmosphere that's a nice break from more crowded tourist spots. There are a few restaurants along the riverside where you can try local Herzegovinian dishes while enjoying the view of the monastery and the spring. The climate here is surprisingly mild, with Mediterranean influences despite being inland, making it pleasant to visit in different seasons.
