Meteora

Meteora
Meteora in Greece is one of those places that truly takes your breath away. These massive rock formations rise up from the ground with ancient monasteries perched right on top, creating a surreal landscape that seems to defy logic and gravity alike.
The region became a sanctuary for monks looking to escape persecution, with the first monasteries being built in the 14th century. Originally, there were 24 monasteries, but only six remain active today. The monks used ropes, nets, and later ladders to access these precarious spots, which shows an incredible level of dedication and engineering skill for that time period.
The name 'Meteora' actually means 'suspended in air,' which perfectly describes how these monasteries appear to float among the clouds on foggy mornings. Beyond its religious significance, Meteora has also served as a filming location for Game of Thrones and the James Bond film 'For Your Eyes Only.'
The area surrounding Meteora offers charming traditional Greek villages like Kastraki, where visitors can taste authentic local cuisine and experience Greek hospitality. The nearby town of Kalambaka serves as the main gateway to this UNESCO World Heritage site, providing easy access to one of Greece's most spectacular natural and cultural wonders.
