Mývatn

Mývatn, a volcanic lake in northern Iceland, sits in one of the most geologically active places on Earth. The area is a mix of strange lava formations, steaming geothermal fields, and bright blue waters that together create an almost otherworldly landscape.

The lake itself was formed by a massive volcanic eruption about 2,300 years ago, and the surrounding area continues to show signs of Iceland's volcanic nature. The Krafla volcanic system nearby has erupted over 20 times in recorded history, with the most recent series happening in the 1980s. This volcanic activity has created countless hot springs, mud pools and steam vents throughout the region.

Mývatn actually means 'midge lake' in Icelandic, named after the tiny flies that gather around the water during summer. While these bugs might be annoying, they form an important part of the ecosystem, providing food for the many bird species that make Mývatn one of Europe's premier birdwatching destinations. Over 115 different bird species have been spotted here, including thirteen duck species that nest nowhere else in Iceland.

The area features several stunning attractions like the Dimmuborgir lava formations, the Hverfjall crater, and the Mývatn Nature Baths - a less crowded alternative to the famous Blue Lagoon. In winter, the region transforms with snow and ice but remains accessible, offering a completely different perspective of this fascinating landscape.
