Nafplio

Nafplio
Nafplio is a charming coastal town in Greece's Peloponnese, often called the country's first capital after independence. Its streets are a mix of Venetian, Ottoman, and neoclassical architecture that tell stories of its complex past under different rulers.
The town is known for its iconic Palamidi Fortress that sits 216 meters above sea level. Visitors who climb all 999 steps to the top are rewarded with spectacular views of the town and the Argolic Gulf. Across the water, you'll spot the small Bourtzi fortress on its own tiny island, originally built by the Venetians in the 1400s to protect the harbor.
The old town area features narrow alleyways with brightly colored buildings, flower-filled balconies, and hidden squares where you can enjoy Greek coffee under the shade of orange trees. Syntagma Square serves as the heart of the town, surrounded by impressive historic buildings including the Archaeological Museum housed in a Venetian building.
What makes Nafplio special is how it balances being a living, breathing Greek town while preserving its historical character. It's less crowded than many Greek destinations but still offers that perfect Mediterranean atmosphere with waterfront restaurants, evening strolls along the promenade, and nearby beaches for when the summer heat kicks in.
