Perast

Perast
Perast is a tiny coastal town in Montenegro, just a short drive from Kotor. With a population of only a few hundred people, it packs an incredible amount of charm and history into its small size. The town features stunning Venetian-style architecture with many 17th and 18th-century buildings still beautifully preserved along its waterfront.
The Bay of Kotor provides a dramatic backdrop, with mountains plunging into the deep blue waters. Perast's main claim to fame is the two picturesque islands just offshore - Our Lady of the Rocks (an artificial island built by locals) and St. George Island with its Benedictine monastery. Our Lady of the Rocks has an interesting origin story: sailors would drop stones at this spot after successful voyages, gradually creating the island over centuries.
The town's maritime history runs deep. During the Venetian period, Perast was a significant seafaring center with a renowned maritime school. This heritage is celebrated in the local museum, housed in the Bujović Palace. The town's skyline is dominated by the tall bell tower of St. Nicholas Church, offering amazing views for those willing to climb.
Despite its small size, Perast manages to capture the essence of Montenegro's coastal beauty without the crowds of some larger destinations. The lack of cars in the town center (it's mostly pedestrianized) adds to its peaceful atmosphere, making it perfect for slow exploration along the waterfront promenade with its cafes and restaurants.
