Počitelj

Počitelj
Počitelj is a small historical town in Bosnia and Herzegovina that feels like you've stepped back in time. Sitting above the emerald-green Neretva River, this walled medieval village dates back to the 14th century and showcases a fascinating blend of Ottoman and Mediterranean architecture.
As you walk through the narrow cobblestone streets, you'll notice the impressive Hajji Alija Mosque dominating the skyline with its tall minaret. The fortress at the top of the hill offers incredible panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and river valley below. The town's stone houses with their red-tiled roofs create a picturesque scene that photographers will love.
Počitelj has survived numerous conflicts throughout history, including significant damage during the 1990s Bosnian War. Following extensive restoration efforts, it now stands as a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Interestingly, the town was an important administrative center during the Ottoman period and was home to many artists and poets.
During summer, the town hosts an artist colony where painters from around the region come to capture its unique beauty. With its strategic location just 30 kilometers from Mostar and about 170 kilometers from Sarajevo, Počitelj makes for an excellent day trip or stop on a longer Balkan journey.
