Postojna

Postojna
Postojna is a small town in southwestern Slovenia that's famous for its incredible cave system. The Postojna Cave stretches over 24 kilometers underneath the town, making it one of the largest cave systems in Europe. The fascinating thing about these caves is that they've been attracting tourists for more than 200 years - people have been officially visiting since 1819!
The caves aren't just empty tunnels - they're filled with stunning stalactites and stalagmites that have formed over millions of years. One of the most unique things about Postojna is the cave train that takes visitors deep into the underground network. It's been running since 1872, making it one of the oldest tourist cave trains in the world.
Near the caves lives one of Slovenia's most unusual residents - the olm, also called the "human fish." These pale, blind salamanders can live up to 100 years and survive without food for up to 10 years. They're found only in the underground waters of this region.
Beyond the caves, Postojna is surrounded by beautiful Slovenian countryside and is just a short drive from other attractions like Predjama Castle, which is dramatically built into the side of a cliff. The town itself is charming with its central European architecture and relaxed atmosphere, making it a perfect stop between Ljubljana and the coast.
