Sounion

Sounion is a town located at the southernmost tip of the Attica peninsula, about 70 kilometers southeast of Athens. It's most famous for the stunning ancient ruins of the Temple of Poseidon, which stand proudly on a cliff 60 meters above the sea. This magnificent temple was built in the 5th century BCE and offers one of the most incredible sunset views in all of Greece.

The temple's history is deeply connected to Greek mythology and maritime traditions. Ancient sailors would spot these bright marble columns from far at sea, signaling they were nearly home. Legend says that King Aegeus jumped to his death from these cliffs when he thought his son Theseus had died fighting the Minotaur, giving the Aegean Sea its name.

Beyond the archaeological site, Sounion features beautiful beaches with crystal-clear waters perfect for swimming. The surrounding area has a few tavernas serving fresh seafood and traditional Greek dishes with spectacular views of the coastline.

Despite being a popular day trip from Athens, Sounion maintains a peaceful atmosphere, especially in the morning before tour buses arrive or in the evening after they leave. The combination of historical significance, natural beauty, and that breathtaking view of the endless blue Aegean Sea makes Sounion an unforgettable stop on any Greek itinerary.
