Tema

Tema
Tema is one of Ghana's most important cities, known primarily as a major harbor and industrial hub. Located about 25 kilometers east of the capital Accra, Tema was built in the 1950s as a planned city alongside the development of its deep artificial harbor, now the largest in Ghana.
When Ghana gained independence in 1957, President Kwame Nkrumah had big dreams for Tema to become an industrial powerhouse. Today, that vision has largely materialized with the city handling about 80% of Ghana's import and export activities. The busy port area is fascinating to observe, with massive cargo ships, colorful containers, and constant movement.
The city has a distinct feel compared to other Ghanaian towns. Its grid layout with well-planned neighborhoods (called communities) makes it easy to navigate. Community One is the heart of the city with its market, shops, and administrative buildings.
While overshadowed by Accra in terms of tourism, Tema offers authentic glimpses into modern Ghanaian urban life. The local fishing harbor provides a stark contrast to the industrial port nearby, with traditional wooden boats bringing in fresh catches daily. The fish market here bustles with activity, especially in the mornings.
Many visitors are surprised to learn that Tema was built on land purchased from indigenous Ga people. The name itself comes from 'Torman,' meaning gourd or calabash in the Ga language, referring to the shape of a lagoon around which the city was built.
