Torun

Torun is one of Poland's most impressive medieval cities, and it's easy to see why. Founded in the 13th century, this UNESCO World Heritage site sits on the banks of the Vistula River and boasts some of the best-preserved Gothic architecture in the country.

What makes Torun special is that it escaped major damage during WWII, unlike many other Polish cities. The Old Town is surrounded by defensive walls and features original medieval buildings like the impressive Town Hall and the Leaning Tower (which has a more dramatic tilt than the one in Pisa, by the way).

Torun is famous as the birthplace of astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus, whose former home is now a museum. The city is also known for its delicious gingerbread (pierniki), a tradition dating back over 700 years. You can visit the Living Gingerbread Museum to learn about the history and even make your own.

The vibrant student population from Nicolaus Copernicus University keeps the city feeling young and energetic, with plenty of cafés and bars dotting the cobblestone streets. Walking through Torun feels like stepping back in time, but with all the conveniences of modern life.
