Trebinje

Trebinje
Trebinje is a charming city in southern Bosnia and Herzegovina, just a short drive from both the Croatian and Montenegrin borders. It's often overlooked by tourists in favor of more famous spots like Mostar or Sarajevo, which makes it perfect for travelers looking to escape crowds and discover something authentic.
The city sits along the banks of the Trebišnjica River, with historic stone bridges connecting its parts. The old town has that typical Mediterranean vibe with stone buildings, narrow streets and outdoor cafés where locals gather for coffee that seems to last for hours. The main square, with its plane trees and relaxed atmosphere, is the perfect spot to watch daily life unfold.
Trebinje has a rich history dating back to the Roman era, though much of what you see today comes from the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian periods. The Osman-Paša mosque and the orthodox Hercegovačka Gračanica monastery (built on a hill overlooking the city) reflect the region's diverse cultural influences. The city was also the hometown of famous poet Jovan Dučić, whose legacy is celebrated throughout Trebinje.
Wine lovers should know that this area is becoming increasingly recognized for its excellent wines, particularly from the indigenous Vranac grape. The surrounding countryside, with its Mediterranean climate, is dotted with vineyards, olive groves, and cypress trees that create a landscape more reminiscent of Tuscany than what many expect from Bosnia and Herzegovina.
