Würzburg

Würzburg is one of those German cities that doesn't get the attention it deserves. Located in northern Bavaria on the Main River, this city combines wonderful architecture, rich history, and a laid-back vibe that makes visitors feel at home right away.

The most striking landmark is the Würzburg Residence, a massive baroque palace that's now a UNESCO World Heritage site. The interior's grand staircase and ceiling fresco by Tiepolo are absolutely worth seeing. The city's skyline is dominated by the Marienberg Fortress which sits on a hill overlooking the city, offering great views of the surrounding area.

Würzburg is also the center of Franconian wine country, and the locals take their wine seriously. The region specializes in dry white wines, particularly Silvaner, which pairs perfectly with local dishes. Throughout the year, the city hosts various wine festivals where you can taste wines directly from local producers.

The city was nearly destroyed during WWII when about 90% of it was flattened in just 20 minutes during a bombing raid in 1945. The remarkable reconstruction efforts have brought back much of its historical charm, though some modern elements blend with the rebuilt historical structures. Today, Würzburg thrives as a university town with a vibrant atmosphere and friendly locals who are proud of their distinct Franconian culture that sets them apart from the rest of Bavaria.
