Zakynthos

Zakynthos
Zakynthos, the third largest of the Ionian Islands in Greece, is an incredible place with striking contrasts. The island is known for its vibrant blue waters and white sandy beaches, especially the iconic Navagio Beach (Shipwreck Beach) with its famous shipwreck resting on shore. The crystal clear waters are also home to endangered loggerhead sea turtles that return to lay their eggs on Zakynthos beaches each year.
The island isn't just about beaches though. The interior is filled with small traditional villages, olive groves, and vineyards that show a different side of Greek life. The capital, Zakynthos Town, features Venetian-style architecture reflecting the island's time under Venetian rule from the 15th to 18th centuries. Much of the original architecture was destroyed in a 1953 earthquake, but the town was carefully rebuilt to preserve its historical character.
Food lovers will appreciate the local cuisine, which follows typical Greek traditions but with its own regional twists. The island produces excellent olive oil and wine, and restaurants serve fresh seafood caught daily. Look for local specialties like ladotyri (oil cheese) and skordostoumbi (a garlicky eggplant dish).
For a taste of local culture, time your visit during one of the many religious festivals or paniyiria (village celebrations) that take place throughout the year. These events feature traditional music, dancing, and food, offering a glimpse into authentic Greek island life that many tourists miss.
